What does it cost

To understand the true potential cost of an illness to your emotional and financial well-being, we can look at the true-to-life scenario in Lisa's story...

Lisa's story

“Lisa” is 38 years old, married and has a son who just turned 14.

How would you fare in Lisa's situation?

Estimate the amount you'd want to fund your recovery. Then enter that coverage amount into our loan calculator and RRSP withdrawal calculator. Can you afford not to get critical illness insurance?

And there's more.

Also good to know

Some critical illness insurance plans return some or all of the premiums you paid if you don't end up needing to make a claim. It's something to think about if you're putting money into a savings account each month. Your money accumulates either way - but the savings account won't pay out a lump sum benefit to you if you get sick. This feature is known as “return of premium”. It's available on the more comprehensive plans.

Now what?

Now that you're informed, it's up to you. You could:

Research your options - Look at the various plans that are available. Simple plans might cover the four critical illnesses with the highest incidence rates - cancer, heart attack, stroke and coronary artery bypass surgery. Comprehensive plans cover many more illnesses, such as Alzheimer's disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

Some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.
